Barbara Ehrenreich is a writer and thinker involved in the exploration of social phenomenon. She is certainly a political thinker and definitely has a point of view about social phenomena as they impact modern life. She is not an historian or an anthropologist. I’m at a loss to understand the criticism of this book based on what it never pretends itself to be, a history of dance or an anthropological study of the ecstatic phenomenon.

Several people have found it necessary to point out that Barbara Ehrenreich is on the left politically and a product of the 1960s with an „ah hah“ mentality that seems to indicate she has has somehow tried to hide this, or that it inherently shameful. Social thinkers who propose changes in the way we currently conduct our lives or our society ALWAYS have ideas which they promote (pejoratively described as biases) because they actively advocate for change. It would be dishonest to attempt to hide them behind a false „objectivity.“

This kind of false „objectivity“ has sapped the life, not only from much that passes for social commentary, but also from investigative journalism, in which the collection of a quote or two from „authorities“ on each side of a conflict has replaced the search for the truth about a given situation. It has also lead to the false notion that the truth is always located in the middle of the road.

Bravo to Barbara Ehrenreich who never hides behind this sort of fakery in her search for the truth as she sees it. She invites readers to join the dance of two minds, the writer’s and the reader’s, in thinking about topics that engage her own thoughts.

Some critics seem to be attacking the fact that her writing is interesting and fun to read. Never fear! I managed to read the book and enjoy it very much while maintaining my critical faculties and without agreeing with every one of Ehrenreich’s conclusions. I did learn a lot AND my mind was engaged to think about dance and the human capacity for collective joy in ways that are new and exciting to me.

Eigentlich begann dieser Abend ganz anders, und Klaus‘ Geschichten entführten mich auf seinen jüngsten Kanutrip durch eine kanadische Wildnis. Ich fahre mit meinem Hund Sancho morgen auch in unbekannte Gefilde, in einen Teil des Sauerlandes, wo ich noch nie war, und der alte Spanier schon gar nicht. Den Cocker werde ich bespassen, und wir werden uns auch ein paar ernste Dinge erzählen. Heute hatte er eine lange Session mit einer Hundeflüsterin (das war die Abteilung Parapsychologie des Tages), das war Stunden, nachdem ich das erste Hautscreening meines Lebens erlebte.  Ich war später schon darauf eingestimmt, im Jahre 1968 der Londoner Geschichte von Detective Breen und seiner Kollegin Tozer zu folgen (William Shaws männlicher Protagonist ist ein Fremder in der Welt der Psychedelik), da rief mich mein Schulfreund mit westfälischer Bikerstimme an – und natürlich sprachen wir über „Sons of Anarchy“. Von dem Virus waren wir  Wochen lang befallen, und ich erzählte ihm, vor Weihnachten würde ich hier hier die Story reinstellen von Dr. Werlich (dem Englischlehrer, der mit uns W. Shakespeare. D.H. Lawrence las, solche Kaliber) und den „Söhnen der Anarchie“. Wie wäre er damals mit diesem Stoff umgegangen? Schliesslich (fortgeschrittene Stunde, Betthupferl) griff ich mir ein Stück Schokolade mit einer Spur Salz, und wollte mir noch den Stream der neuen CD von John Grant anhören, landete aber bei diesem lang verschollenen Interview mit dem durch Suizid aus dem Leben geschiedenen Elliott Smith. Eine raffinierte Art trickfilmtechnischer Aufbereitung – manafonistisch durch und durch. Später hörte ich dann auf youtube die Version von Ed Sheerans „Make It Rain“, die Version mit reparierter Stimme („fixed voice“) – beeindruckend. Draussen vor dem Hotelfenster geht tatsächlich gerade Regen nieder. Diane, es ist 22:29, und ich lege mich aufs Bett und träume mit offenen Augen.

William Shaw hat bislang drei Romane geschrieben, die sich um ein Londoner Ermittlerpaar anno 1968 drehen. Cathal Breen und Helen Tozer. Der zweite Thriller ist bei uns gerade zum „thriller of the month“ gekürt worden, der dritte liegt bislang allein im englischen Original vor. Der Auftakt der Reihe, SONG FROM DEAD LIPS hat, in bestem Deutsch, den etwas plakativen Titel ABBEY ROAD MURDER SONG bekommen.

„Swinging London“? Der „Swing“ darf nicht mit dem Jazzstil verwechselt werden, es war die Hoch- und Endzeit der Beatles, die Welt wurde farbig, aber bei vielen Zeitgeistern herrschte damals noch tristes Grau. Die englische Staatsmacht beförderte das Grauen von Biafra, Frauen- und Fremdenfeindlichkeit geistern klassenübergreifend durch die Gesellschaft.

Dysfunktionale, traumatisierte Detektive, Korruption auf allen Ebenen – Nostalgie wird einem bei der Lektüre vorzugsweise ausgetrieben. Was man statt eines kolorierten Sittengemäldes erhält, ist ein packender, abgründiger Roman, der anfangs ein langsames Tempo anschlägt und  permanent mit der beträchtlichen Fallhöhe aller Beteiligten rechnet. Und „feeling“, „soul“, das gibt es zum Glück auch.
