The poems by two Norwegian lyricists are sensual explorations and mythical fantasies about the lifes of absent gods. A journey that might even please hard core atheists. A shangrila for agnostics, open ears, lyric lovers and other strangers. Sidsel Endresen is the singer here, not the the speaker. She nearly never sings conventional language. But The listener can detect more torch and passion in her performance than in any well-mannered, recycled love song. The landscape created by the musicians adds to the lyrics another layer, inspires an intimate approach to the verses. The voice of Sylvian in the center, calm, focussed, within these stories about twilight worlds, power, well, the loss of power, and alienation. 1969 reisen die vier Musiker Roscoe Mitchell, Joseph Jarman, Lester Bowie und Malachi Favors nach Paris und verbringen dort, im von Robert Wyatt so hinreissend besungenen „Old Europe“, die nächsten Jahre. Sie nennen sich ART ENSEMBLE OF CHICAGO, und die knallbunten Hemden, Ziegenbärtchen und John Lennon-Brille mutieren bald in afrikanische Gesichtsbemalung. Da ihnen kurz vor dem Umzug der Schlagzeuger abhanden kam, erledigten sie diesen Job für die nächste Zeit alleine. So was hatte man auch im Free Jazz noch nie gehört: anarchistischer Humor und seriöse Soundforschung fanden zu einer Einheit, das alte New Orleans konnte jederzeit genauso aufleuchten wie ein Bassriff von James Brown, futuristischer Bebop, oder guter alter Blues. In den Milestones, in der Radionacht des Deutschlandfunks, stelle ich am kommenden Freitag zur Zeit des Hahnenschreis (4.05 Uhr) diese beiden wegweisenden Aufnahmen von Pionieren des Free Jazz vor, A JACKSON IN YOUR HOUSE und MESSAGE TO OUR FOLKS. Damals bei Byg Records erschienen, mittlerweile in einer feinen Aufmachung neu veröffentlicht, auf einer Doppel-CD (zusammen mit der dritten Pariser Produktion, REESE AND THE SMOOTH ONES).
