„12 favourite vinyls“ / „Divertimento“

von: Michael Engelbrecht Filed under: Blog | TB | 2 Comments

    1. Don Cherry & Ed Blackwell: El Corazon (ECM)
    2. Brian Eno: On Land (45 rpm-edition)
    3. Keith Jarrett: Book Of Ways (ECM)
    4. Sonny Rollins: Way Out West
    5. Neil Young: Hitchhiker (Reprise)
    6. Gary Peacock: Voice from The Past (ECM)
    7. Muddy Waters: Folk Singer
    8. Archie Shepp & Mal Waldron: Let Alone Revisited (Enja)
    9. Kenny Burrell: Midnight Blue
    10. Joan Armatrading: s/t (Intervention Records)
    11. The Beatles: Rubber Soul (The Mono Box Set)
    12. John Coltrane: My Favourite Things (60th Anniversary Ed.)

„It sounds like the album is supposed to sound, or — perhaps more accurately – how I remember it sounding growing up as a kid. Sure, I was listening to the Capitol Records version at the time, but it was a MONO version and that is the sound I grew accustomed to. I never quite got into the Stereo versions of Rubber Soul, try as I did over the years. I especially prefer the Mono mix of “Drive My Car” as it puts the cowbell into proper perspective (its way too in your face on the Stereo mix – whenever I hear the Stereo mix, I expect Christopher Walken to come walking through the door demanding yet “a little more cowbell!” Yes, Rubber Soul sounds really so so good. Big rich sounding acoustic guitars with just enough jangle when the songs need to rock out. Dead quiet vinyl, again, and the sides are perfectly centered.“

Die Neil Young-Schallplatte ist an allem, was Transparenz, Dynamik, Intensität, Intimität, Unmittelbarkeit ausmacht, nicht zu übertreffen: a night with David Briggs at the controls. Immer noch unter 30 Euros erhältlich.

Here’s an old text from 2019: I once was asked about my favourite Blue Note albums, and I was surely not asked as an insider. I was just way too young to be totally immersed with the label‘s salad days that were heavily connected with the stylings of what they then called hard bop. But over the years, I stumbled on some famous ones, and lesser known gems. The wonderful German writer Ernst Augustin has lived out his knack for Lee Morgans The Sidewinder in his nearly forgotten masterpiece „Der amerikanische Traum“. I can definitely say, I nearly obsessively listened to two very old jazz albums. One was Sonny Rollins‘ Way Out West (no Blue Note record), the other ones Kenny Burrell‘s Midnight Blue. It puts a smile on my face remembering I once sent Robert Wyatt Julio Cortazar’s Rayuela, a book that is a terrific work of lost hopes, friendship, everlasting love, soul food called jazz, sex and escapes, sex and exile, smoking, sipping tea from Argentina, and, well, dying. Let‘s return to the music. As I said, I am not a Blue Note afficionado. For example, I never understood what made me love Sonny Clark‘s „Cool Struttin‘“, at least for a while, I would never call it „my music“. Life is strange. Life is, at certain points and passages, a long drink of the blues. Saying this, another gem of the Blue Note catalgues springs to mind: „Let Freedom Ring“

  1. Olaf Westfeld:

  2. Michael Engelbrecht:
