Ich kenne den Teenage Fanclub etwas länger als Norman Blake (seit unserem Interview zu dem wunderbaren Album „Bandwagonesque“ (1991)), und bin ihm später ein weiteres Mal im Umfeld eines Projekt seines Glasgower Musikfreundes Bill Wells begegnet. Ein kluger Gentleman in reiferen Jahren, mit einer unerschöpflichen Liebe zum „old-fashioned pop song“. Mein Gespräch mit ihm war mal in einer alten Sendung von WDR 2 zu hören, „Pop Session“ – lang ist es her. Und noch immer haut Norman feine Songs raus, die so gewitzt wie vielschichtig sind, und stets fallen mir ein paar ein, welche in die Liste „heimlicher Jukebox-Hits“ aufgenommen werden sollten. Nur, es waren eben fast nie richtige Singles. Sollte jemand nun neugierig geworden sein auf den Teenage Fanclub – das obige Album ist wirklich ein guter Einstieg. Hier sein Favorit des Jahres, eine wirklich zauberhafte Arbeit, die in meinem Jahresrückblick am 6. Dezember auf Platz 5 landet (in meinen Rückblicken gibt es nur „wertende Reihenfolgen“ – a very addictive listening experience from start to end, that‘s what I would call it. And in case it is a kind of „rock opera“ Norman is speaking of, i very much prefer „Coral Island“ to The Who’s „Tommy“, seriously.)
„My pick of this year’s releases is Coral Island by The Coral. I’ve liked their music since I went to see Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci supporting them in Glasgow, 20 years ago. It’s one of those rare albums where every song is good, and the narration gives the album a kind of rock opera feel and I’m a sucker for that kind of thing. I really like their sonic palette – close harmonies, in your face organ, and jangly, surfy guitars. James Skelly’s voice has a lovely timbre too.
This year I started collecting the Top Of The Pops albums – you can pick them up pretty cheaply from charity shops. My favourites are the ones that were made during the punk era. That someone thought it was a good idea to cover Death Disco or Gary Gilmore’s Eyes is both mind-boggling and very funny. They made about 150 of these compilations and I have around 25, so I have quite a ways to go before I complete my collection!“
