Manafonistas

During the last days and weeks I discovered some songs of Carlos Santana, which probably may be assigned to the topic of mainstream, but I don´t mind. Since I meanwhile have to transfer nearly every song I like into my own guitar-playing, a new way of listening has developed over the years, which admittedly has something addictive about it. A good song always introduces itself as a binding and as a border as well – in it´s unknown structure and in the sense that you can’t play everything you´re listening to immediately. But the analytical ear is trained over time and that’s a good thing, because you can’t always rely on these quickly available online chord sheets. One example is a lockdown session with Carlos, John and Friends that made me want to anticipate and participate. What damn kind of lick is that in minute 0:15? I want to own it, play it, keep and eat it, digest it in my system. The chords are quite simple but this kind of music shows the meaning of the correct counting time. One of many meanings of the Blues. Like Wolfram once wrote: every Manafonist has to find his own subject. Well, this songdiving thing is mine.

Discourses ist das dritte Pianosoloalbum von Jon Balke, das einmal mehr Manfred Eicher produziert hat. Zum Klang des Flügels gesellen sich des öfteren manch fremdartige, sorgsam ausgewählte Sounds. Der Klavierklang verliert seine reine Autonomie. Mit all den auf Prägnanz zielenden Kompositionen – nichts ufert aus oder verliert sich in einem poetischen Nirvana – geht erstaunliche Luftigkeit daher. Das Album fesselt vom ersten Ton an. Alle Magie hat ihre ganz alltäglichen Begleitphänomene. Solche Geschichten gefallen mir immer wieder.

„Es gab viele spezielle Situationen im Studio in Lugano, die meisten drehten sich um die Arbeit – intensives Hören, kurze Kommentare. Stille. Die Sache ist die, dass das Aufgehen in der Musik und die Konzentration enorm sind. Aber das erste, was mir in Erinnerung kommt, ist, dass ich Manfred eine Menge Schweizer Münzen schulde. Nach der Landung, oder auch früh morgens, ging ich stets gleich ins Studio, ich bekam es nie hin, mein Geld zu tauschen. Und jedesmal, wenn wir eine Kaffeepause machten, nahe den Toiletten, ausserhab des Studios, ist der Raum mit all den Kaffeemaschinen, hatte ich nie passende Münzen. Ein ums andere Mal öffnete Manfred seine Geldbörse und besorgte mir den Kaffee. Das passierte wieder und wieder, und mit der Zeit machte es mich doch etwas verlegen. Also schulde ich ihm tatsächlich eine Menge Kaffee. Wir hatten so viele gute Gespräche dort, während wir an den hohen Tischen standen und unseren Kaffee tranken, aus kleinen Plastikbechern.“
