Paris, 2013. I got off the train and walked all the way to Rue Beaurepaire in Pantin. It took ages. It was the middle of July. My bag was heavy. By the time I got to Pantin I was tired. Couldn’t find the building. The number didn’t exist. It was the wrong fucking Rue Beaurepaire. I was supposed to be at the one située dans le 10e arrondissement. Fuck. I loved Pantin though, all 15 minutes I was there. Metropolitain’d it back into town, to Republique. Next day I was in the Marais. On the way I spotted a Scottish pub: the Auld Alliance. Well, I had to go in and check it out. Mais, il n’a pas été exotique. It was exactly like what you’d get in Edinburgh High Street. I bought a can of Irn-Bru. People say Paris is rude – this could hardly be further from the truth. What it is, is Paris.

Paris, November 2014. I was staying on Montmartre. The Gare du Nord has folk sleeping outside it – mattresses, the lot. I’ve done 2am night safari in King’s Cross, sat in a deserted branch of Subway at 3am with a coffee, while police and ambulance sirens do their doppler effect past the window. But Gare du Nord is a different kind of dubstep. I get to Montmartre by foot (I always go on foot if possible – what you save on bus/metro fares you can spend on shoe repairs). Boulevard de Rochechouart feels like home to me, dunno why. It’s not Switzerland, put it that way. London has its zombies, Paris its ghosts. Incredible contrast.
