It’s a very hot summer in Germany, and this may have influenced a bit next month’s choice of recommendations. Just look at the cover of King Creosote’s new record, and you know what I mean. The Scotsman and the legendary Mike Cooper transcend the so-called folk idiom without sacrificing its roots. Both artists, one in 2014, one in 1970, enrich the old traditions with a broad palette of emotions and arrangements reaching from chamber music to free floating jazz, from cinematic string moods to surprising breaks. And, yeah, it’s the best time for „beach books“. The old prejudice is that on beaches the value of literature has a lighter weight, but that’s nonsense. Discover the Hitchcock-fuelled world of love and desaster of Anne Goldmann’s „Lichtschacht“, or a nearly timeless introduction into the history of philosophy. One of the books you can read with 17, and 71. Time moves in circles – and anniversaries: in September the cd of the month will probably be the forthcoming debut of Erik Honore on Hubro Records, or the forthcoming record of Arve Henriksen (with strings) on Rune Grammofon. Both essential figures of the Punktfestival of Kristiansand that will celebrate its 10th edition in September (4th-6th). 

Dass die Musikritik, und nicht zuletzt die, welche sich gerne einen geistig hochstehenden Anstrich gibt, immer mehr auf den Hund kommt, und gerne Klänge lobpreist, denen entweder eine Art nostalgisches Aufsehen oder eine schnell verglühende Hitze sicher sind (von Morissey bis La Roux), ist ein Eindruck, der sich in letzter Zeit verdichtet hat. Den Vogel abgeschossen hat heute in der SZ ein Kritiker namens Max oder Moritz Fellman, der am Schluss seines zwanghaft spassigen Streifzugs durch diverse Neuveröffentlichungen mit einer besonderen Pointe aufwartet: die anstehende Veröffentlichung der Platte von Scott Walker und Sunn O))) wirkt für ihn wie einem Rätselspass entnommen, bei dem man ganz und gar unmögliche Kombinationen aushecken darf. Tja, ein Scherzkeks bei der Arbeit: wer nur marginal die Werke der beiden Parteien aus den letzten fünfzehn Jahren kennt, weiss, dass diese Kombination verdammt naheliegend und alles andere als bizarr ist. Offensichtlich kommt die SZ öfter ins Schleudern, wenn es um Scott Walker geht. Unvergessen die blödsinnige Schmäh meines speziellen Münchner „Freundes“ auf Scott Walker, beleidigend, arrogant, und dumm. Unser berüchtigter Dialog jetzt im Original. Er: „Ich habe in meinem Leben stets versucht, Leuten wie dir aus dem Weg zu gehen.“ Ich: „Das heisst, du hast tatsächlich immer alle Spiegel in deinem Haus verhängt?“
