What have been some of your biggest non-musical sources of inspiration?

Doug: Reading, especially short stories, and mostly Alice Munro these days. I also really enjoy movies, especially 1970s and early ’80s. I mostly follow the art direction and the character actors like Christopher Walken, John Cassavettes, and Dustin Hoffman. And I do a lot of walking.

Like virtually every European jazz artist of his generation, Andersen says that his course was set by his early exposure to American musicians. “When I came up in the ’60s, there were no jazz schools in Norway. In Scandinavia, I had a chance to play with people like George Russell and Don Cherry. Dexter Gordon and Art Farmer also spent time here. Then I visited New York in the early ’70s and played with Sam Rivers and Paul Bley. To play with these masters, learning how they phrased, feeling their time, that was my school. Der Bassist hat also auch mit den Jazzmeistern gespielt, in jungen Jahren, die hier zuletzt ausgiebig vorgestellt wurden, Paul Bley und Don Cherry (wer sie besitzt, höre die Cherry-Platte ETERNAL RHYTHM von 1968). Am 22.2. stelle ich in den MILESTONES der Radionacht im Deutschlandfunk die drei Alben vor, die Arild Andersen mit seiner skandinavischen Band für ECM aufnahm, CLOUDS IN THE SKY, SHIMRI und GREEN SHADING INTO BLUE. Hier tritt der Aspekt einer typisch nordeuropäischen Musik deutlich hervor, in Werken, die nicht so spektakulär sind wie die frühen Alben von Jan Garbarek oder Terje Rypdal, doch ohne Zweifel den Test der Zeit bestanden haben.
