Die Revolutionen seien alle vorbei, die einzig wirkliche Revolution sei sowieso die der Beatles: All you need is love. Das behaupten junge Jurastudenten am Anfang des Films, den ich gestern Abend gesehen habe. Vier Stunden lang.

Ein psychisch gestoerter, hochintelligenter Jurastudent begeht aus Ungerechtigkeitsgruenden und -gefuehlen einen Doppelmord und eine Vergewaltigung. Den Kopf dafuer muss ein Familienvater hinhalten, der deswegen zu Unrecht ins schlimmste Gefaengnis kommt. Seine Frau versucht sich und die Kinder mit Verkauf von Gemuese durchzubringen.

Ja, es ist ein Sozialdrama, alles hoert sich nach Kevin Coyne´s „The world is full of fools“ an und man geht aus dem langen Drama mit seinem zuletzt gesungenen Satz: “ But it doesn’t make me a bad person.“

Was fuer ein grosses Erzaehlkino da mit den erst gewechselten Worten unter Intellektuellen beginnt, Rudi Dutschke haengt am Treppenabsatz , Hannah Arendt wacht am Gelaender und Nietzsche wird verwirklicht. Es geht um die grossen Fragen: Gibt es Gerechtigkeit? Was ist die Wahrheit?

Schnell werden die harten Lebensbedingungen der Kinder klar, deren Eltern entweder ausgewandert sind und sie ohne Liebe zurueckliessen und der Kinder, deren Eltern ums Ueberleben ringen und ihnen alle Liebe der Welt zuteilkommen lassen. Dass man ganz nah an die kleinen Lebensbiografien rankommt, verdankt man der langen Einstellung und der ruhigen Kamerafuehrung. Manchmal lebt man geradezu in der Szene mit, es wird meist sehr wenig gesprochen, man fuehlt die Zeit, die Problematik, die Luft.

Und doch wird man durch den grellen Lichtwechsel regelrecht hinausgeworfen, ab in die neue Geschichte und dieses Mal in eine Aufnahme von einer Gefaengniszelle, die kaum surrealer sein kann. Da sitzt ein Affe neben einem Gefaengnisinsassen, da spielt einer Gitarre mit dem herzzerreissenden Liedtext: „Lieb mich, es schmerzt so sehr …“

Das ist grosses slow cinema. Aber keine Einladung, auf die Philippinen zu fahren.

„The new album’s impressive layering can be attributed to the band piecing Riot together entirely in the studio, rather than composing and rehearsing songs beforehand—cobbling it together from scraps of leftover recordings and adding parts one at a time, sometimes months in between. It’s similar to how the group has worked on film music, Kaplan has said, and indeed, there’s a real “imaginary soundtrack” feel to much of Riot, with long stretches of pure tone interspersed between the pop songs. (In “Shortwave,” a beat-less, glassily pretty drone that sits somewhere between Julianna Barwick and Stars Of The Lid, it even yields arguably Yo La Tengo’s first purely ambient track.) There’s also plenty of evidence it was mostly written on a computer: Shambling, snapped-to-grid drum loops, watery fluctuations, choral swells, field sound samples, and other digital tricks abound. Songs don’t end so much as dissolve, lingering just a hair longer than expected, which gives the whole thing a slightly haunted feel. My name is Jenna Mohammed, hello! Bringing the real world into the music world, veterans of indie rock Yo La Tengo release their 15th full-length album. Tomorrow. Haunting, soft, and dreamy from beginning to end, this album explores a multitude of sounds, leaving an impression of escaping to an altered reality.

Starting the album off with the sprawling instrumental track „You Are Here,“ the electric guitars and hazy drones set the tone for the next 14 songs. Tracks like „Out of the Pool“ and „Ashes“ mix their shoegaze sound with a style of funk similar to the album’s namesake, Sly and the Family Stone’s 1971 record There’s a Riot Goin‘ On.

Apart from the bouncier tracks, There’s a Riot Going On is worthy of being the ultimate late-night album. Appropriately titled „Dream Dream Away“ does just that. Playing with psychedelic elements of ample guitar riffs and Ira Kaplan’s winsome vocals leaves chills down your spine, giving us the sense of being left in a liminal space.

The more wistful tracks, such as „For You Too“ and „Shades of Blue,“ offer listeners an aural remedy for the heavy-hearted. Georgia Hubley mulls over heartbreak and isolation as she hypnotically sings: „Painting my room to reflect my mood / Facing my feelings, a life without you.“ By the time you get lost in their powerful sound, these lyrically abstract songs transmit warmth and healing.
