Strings with wings, in cool waters … What to expect when … ???

When you take a variety of string instruments like violin, hardanger fiddle, viola d’amore, contrabass and augment it with saxophone, harmonium, vibraphone/percussion – what you think you will hear, what you think it will sound, what you think you get?
 
 
 

 
 
 
When string-player Nils Økland brings together Mats Eilertsen, Rolf-Erik Nystrøm, Sigbjørn Apeland and Håkon Stene, what do you expect will happen, what do you expect it will sound?

What you get, is a highly confluent, post electronic sound produced purely acoustical based on strong folk music themes. It is less a flickering and pumping broad/big flow but more an undulatory ebb and flow thing.

The acoustic feeling and its dynamics, the purely acoustical stretching creates a sound that is just stupefying when brought by the delicate playing of these five master musicians – a strong crew working for the sake of Økland’s music and musical ideas and he himself a daring musician who succeeded in seducing the musicians to play this daring and unique beautiful music. Extraordinary music, music without parallel!

Extended techniques are fully in service of the pulsating and elegantly undulating sound. With its sophisticated fine tuning this music surmounts many sorts of emanating electronic music. A questions of when doing what with which power and intensity.

Als ich sie besuchte, fiel mir sofort auf, dass sie gar keinen Plattenschrank besass. Ueberhaupt war ihr riesiger Loft nur spaerlich moebliert. Ihre Platten lagen auf dem Boden und zogen sich highwaymaessig durch den Raum. Am Gate blickte ich auf eine Scheibe, die ich ihr nicht zuordnen konnte. Tags zuvor hatte sie mir vorgeschwaermt von DON’T YOU KNOW WHAT THE NIGHT CAN DO? [Steve Winwood/Roll with it], von MONTANA [Frank Zappa/Discreet], und von BOULDER TO BIRMINGHAM [Emmylou Harris/Pieces of the sky].

Ich fragte sie, wie sie an die Ossian Group gekommen sei. Sie sagte, das haette mit ihrem Dad zu tun, besonders das Stueck ROZDZIAL V. Ob ich Lust auf was Suesses haette, fragte sie zurueck. „Immer“. Sie bueckte sich und hielt mir das weisse Album der Beatles hin: SAVOY TRUFFLE „Sehr tasty!“ Ich schlenderte in gebueckter Haltung die Plattenstrasse entlang und erkannte 5 meiner LieblingsLPs: „WOW, da sind hervorragende Stuecke drauf“: OUT OF THE WARDROBE [The Kinks/Misfits}, EASY WIND [Grateful Dead/Dead Set], SALTY DOG [Procol Harum/A Salty Dog], THIS MUST BE THE PLACE [Talking Heads/Speaking tongues], CROW RIVER WALTZ [Leo Kottke/The Best]. Sie hatte also meine Geschmacksohren. Das liess hoffen …

Einmal, erzaehlte sie mir, haette sie gesehen, wie einer ihrer Freunde zwei ihrer Lieblingsplatten unter seinen langen Mantel gesteckt hatte. Sie haette sich nicht getraut, ihn darauf anzusprechen. Aber es seien ihre ‚Abdriftstuecke‘ drauf gewesen: STATESBORO BLUES [The Allman Brothers Band/Capricorn] und EAT THAT QUESTION [Frank Zappa/The grand Wazoo]. Danach haette sie darueber nachgedacht, sich einen abschliessbaren Plattenschrank zuzulegen. Den Gedanken haette sie aber bald wieder verworfen. Sie wandle einfach zu gerne an ihrem Soundpflaster entlang, stelle sich dann selbst gerne Raetselfragen: Auf welcher Platte ist noch mal der Song CROSSROADS [Robert Johnson] oder JOHNNY STRIKES UP THE BAND [Warren Zevon]?

Als wir am Ende ihrer Sammlung angekommen waren, fielen wir auf das gelbe Sofa. Ich fragte sie, warum sie als Ausfahrt GEOMUSIC von Michael Smith gewaehlt haette. Sie lehnte sich an mich und sagte leise: „Das klingt fast so still wie John Cage.“
