Heute habe ich die Uhren weit zurückgedreht, Jahresringe an alten Buchen verschwinden sehen, die elektrischen Jalousien, als der Regen in satten Stössen goss, runter gelassen, bis das Taggrau verschwunden war und das Kerzenlicht Wärme suggerierte, alle Einordnungen abgelegt, Zeit zerteilendes Denken abgeschüttelt, und im satten Rudy Van Gelder-Sound alter Blue-Note-Zeiten, zwei Schallplatten des Altsaxofonisten Jackie McLean gehört, „Let Freedom Ring“, und „A Long Drink Of The Blues“. Und das tat so gut! Hat Julio Cortazar eine Platte des Jazzmusikers besessen, ich hoffe doch sehr! 

Burnt Friedman loves this music, Elvis Costello loves this music, and Manafonistas might love it, too.

Awesome vocals of Mahmoud Ahmed and the killer Dahlack Band.

Ahmed is one of the legendary figures of the Ethiopian music scene, who rose from being a shoe-shine boy to handyman at the Arizona Club, after-hours hangout of Haile Selassie’s classic Imperial Body Guard Band, where he got his first break as a singer. The Derg coup in 1974 led to the Ethiopian music going back underground after Selassie’s earlier easing of restrictions.

This Ethiopian record came out on Mahmoud Ahmed’s own label in 1974. It is very rare!
