En Route – Sommerveie: Molde, Different Horses 3

Pale horses of Stian Westerhus, the dream riders of Terje Rypdal and Frisell’s Big Sur zephyrs at Molde.

The album contains great pieces of music and the string thing is challenging. The question was if would also work well live in a far more stretched out version. Apparently it did not appeal to the audience as a whole. There were listeners who were deeply drawn in and there were listeners who experienced it as monotonous.

The emphasis was on the heaving and broad meandering of melodic lines evoked by all five string-instruments. Long arches with sheer endless repetition. It suggested something of the shimmering air of the Big Sur environment. This floating thing is all Frisell. He invented and developed it. It seems evident to apply it and rely on it.

There was some counterbalancing but not much contrast. Strings were shadowing each other and the guitar, Kang went into microtonal realms cautiously once in a while, unisonos were played with a minute time lag or with contrasting bowing direction and there was some integrated soloing of the violins which lifted the music up occasionally. It were held inside very much. Too much identical repetition brought the music down in the long run. The saturation point will be different for people.
