To tell the truth, I don’t really listen to much new music these days. The things I find myself most listening to are old – either things I want to study, perhaps transcribe and learn to play, or things I want to chill to in these stressful times. That being said, here is a list of 2019 releases that did get into my head and heart this year to varying degrees.

(These are two CD reissues of three 80’s albums by my teacher, who went thru a wonderful period of experimentation with an analog 4 track recorder and his piano, recorded in his octagonal studio high on a hill in Sebastopol. While much of Mathieu’s music is highly composed, these pieces are mostly improvised, joyful multitrack discoveries, sometimes employing prepared piano and vocals which were inspired by his study of the North Indian vocal tradition and African mbira music.)

Dodo ist ein afrikanischer Gesangsstil, der aus der Region des Viktoriasees stammt und Olith Ratego einer seiner bekannteren Protagonisten. 2009 lernten er und Sven Kacirek sich am letzten Tag der Aufnahmen zu dessen facettenreichen Albums The Kenya Sessions kennen und kamen vor zwei Jahren durch Vermittlung eines Studiobetreibers in Nairobi zunächst nur virtuell zusammen: Tabu Osusa schickte Kacirek Gesangsaufnahmen von Ratego mit der Frage, ob er sie zu Stücken ausarbeiten könne. Später trafen sich beide, um neues Material zusammen zu erarbeiten, was musikalisch trotz einiger Sprachbarrieren unglaublich funktionierte (Video). Das Ergebnis ist Auma, ein kaum einzuordnendes Album, das zwischen dem originalen Dodo Blues und einem sich höchst organisch einfügenden perkussiven, akustischen wie elektronischen Klangwald wandelnd ein Meisterstück aktueller Fourth World Music geworden ist. Okitwoye ist hier ein wunderbares Beispiel, Aora Odinona Yo ein anderes Kleinod.

Als Rezensentin blickt man immer nur nach vorne: auf den immer viel zu hohen Stapel der erst-noch-zu-rezensierenden Bücher, auf die Verlagsvorschauen und die Bücher, die im nächsten Frühjahr erscheinen werden, etc., etc. Der musikalische Jahresrückblick von Michael Engelbrecht hat mir vor Augen geführt, dass Rückblicke im Literaturbetrieb ganz unüblich sind, aber vielleicht gerade deswegen besonders spannend wären. Ich habe mir daher einmal angesehen, welche Bücher und wie viele ich eigentlich im Laufe des Jahres nahezu ausschließlich für fixpoetry.com rezensiert habe und bin auf die doch recht beachtliche Zahl von 23 gekommen, von Oswald Egger bis Ilma Rakusa, das war mein 2019. Ich möchte nun mein literarisches 2019 an dieser Stelle noch einmal im Schnelldurchlauf revuepassieren lassen, und zwar querfeldein und nach Herzenslust über den grün-grünen Rasen rennend …
