on life, music etc beyond mainstream

It would be unfair of me to compare this Eno-Hyde record to the previous one. It would also be a bit silly to do that, since I haven’t heard the previous one yet. If I was comparing the artwork, I’d say the former has a better cover. This one looks like a David Byrne LP to me.

Anyway, on to the music:

1. ‚return‘ – a beautiful composition. Another reviewer here mentions the forward momentum of Steve Reich here, and this is an example of it. Based around two chords played brightly and metallically on guitar, with other elements joining in, until they form a warm, sunny, opiated elevation. 9 minutes long, and yet it closes all to soon. Genre? I dunno – space shanty?

2. ‚DBF‘ – bewildering (in a good way), somewhere between Miles Davis‘ ‚On The Corner‘ and Happy Mondays‘ ‚Freaky Dancin‘ and S Piliso & His Super Seven. Lovely stuff.

3. ‚time to waste it‘ – I can’t get into this one.

4. ‚lilac‘ – like the opener, this one builds into something really great. There’s a synaesthesic quality to the lyrics, while in that Mbaqanga-esque guitar playing there is something bordering on spiritual/ ecstatic.

5. ‚moulded life‘ – I love this one. It’s like film music, it’s like Edgard Varèse’s ‚Amériques‘. It’s also nothing like Edgard Varèse’s ‚Amériques‘. But it does have a similarly menacing vibe.

6. ‚cells & bells‘ – a brilliantly translucent slice of slow-paced, high-calorie pop. The lyrics are delivered with a gravitas that (paradoxically) brings their comedy to the surface, The voice is a little too low in the mix for my liking and is more reverbed than it needs to be. I’d like to see this song reworked maybe 6 times over the course of an album, Raymond Queneau stylee!

All in all, a tenner well spent. Sorry Amazon, but Mr. Fopp (or at any rate the ‚restructuring expert‘ who runs his shop) was selling it cheaper.

comment by m.e.: this style can easily be detected by long-term manafonistas. It was published  somewhere else, under another name. By the way,  I do like this cover, too, it’s brimming (ist that the right word?) with life, high life… And  the photos inside the booklet, well, now, everyone can study Brian“s Maroccan headwear:)

NATURE OF CONNECTIONS.

NATURE OF CONNECTIONS.

That’s what friends are for! NATURE OF CONNECTIONS.

The sun brought me
The moon caught me
The wind fought me
The rain got me

The road sent me
The years bent me
The stars overwhelmed me
Time and again

But now
I can’t see the stars
A star is a thing I can’t see
And now
I don’t feel the same
To feel is a thing that can’t be

Work rushed me
Fame brushed me
The streets hushed me
As life touched me

Time placed me
Events dazed me
Love saved me
Now and again

But now
There can be no love
Love is a thing that can’t be
And now
There can be no trust
Trust is a thing I can’t see

But now
There can be no love
Love is a thing that can’t be
And now
I can’t be so strong
Strong is a thing I can’t be

Time and again
Time and again
The sun brought me

In the gloomy pre-dawn hours of a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of unemployed hopefuls are lined up for a job fair. Without warning, a merciless driver plows through the crowd in a roaring Mercedes. Eight people are killed; 15 are wounded. The killer escapes into the early-spring fog never to be seen from again. Until now…

Detective Bill Hodges is a battle-hardened and streetwise crime fighter originally assigned to the Mercedes killings. Now retired, Hodges has lost his way in boredom and depression craving the thrills of taking down the region’s most notorious criminals. When a disturbing letter from the Mercedes Killer arrives at his door, Hodges soon finds himself uncontrollably drawn into a cat-n-mouse pursuit with stakes beyond comprehension.

Mr. Mercedes is Stephen’s first “hard-boiled detective tale.” It will transport you into a vibrant and dangerous world filled with gritty characters living on the bleeding edge of reason.

Circulatory System

Circulatory System may traffic in whimsical notions, and use pastiche as a mode of expression, but unlike most, they are plumbing the depths of how one can use the studio to orchestrate the utter bliss that pop music brings. Somewhere between Brian Wilson, Van Dyke Parks, and other sources of American weirdness lies the perfection of this estimable and stunning work. „Mosaics Within Mosaics“: the title speaks volumes.

Where’s the ball

Eric Idle is my favorite. Germany versa Greece. Archimedes scheint besonders speedy gewesen zu sein. Natuerlich bekommt Nietzsche die Gelbe Karte, wer sonst. Und hahaha Marx at his best: offside!

Philosophers Cup

Soul Jazz Records is  very excited by these two tracks of stunning Egyptian jazz – both previously unreleased and released on the excellent Art Yard label. Recorded in Heliopolis, Cairo circa 1973, both sides of this 45 offer up a distinctly north African take on traditional jazz sounds. „A Tribute To Sun Ra“ comes across like some long lost Moondog track, full of snaketime percussion and Egyptian horns. Backed with „Latin In Cairo“ a curious mix energetic, calypso / Cuban melody. Limited to 500 copies and pressed on 180g vinyl.  If I do belong to the happy 500, side one will be played in my next „Radionacht Klanghorizonte“ on Aug. 16th. (me)

End of 80s: München Herkulessaal/ mixed program

… was very impressed by Cat O Nine Tails by John Zorn and a string quartet by Gorecki and of course – Steve Reich´s Different Trains

24.8. 1991 Salzburger Festspiele/ Terry Riley The Sands for string quartet and orchestra

… a good chance to meet Terry Riley and the Kronos behind the stage … but these days I was most impressed by Jean Jeanrenaud ;-)

25.8. 1991 Jazzfestival Saalfelden/ mixed program (+Steve Lacy)

… same country only 1 day later …

1992 Documenta Kassel/ mixed program (with Steve Lacy)

… here they played Bob Ostertags All the Rage for the first time. I remember visiting the rehearsal with all the complex voices, screaming coming from the tape and a complicated viola part for Hank Dutt. Before the concert talking with John Sherba and Hank about Nathan Milstein (John is a Fan of his playing too) … sent him some tapes I made from a swiss summer course with Milstein later.

around 1996 Frankfurt Saturn Hansa

… believe me or not – during my years in Frankfurt I often visited the Saturn Hansa near my apartment. On this day I could not believe my eyes when I saw the Kronos Quartet standing around in my favourite CD shop … thats when they signed my Black Angels CD.
