Leonard Cohen, dessen zeitlose Songs mich jetzt schon durch — wieviele ? – Jahre und Lebenssituationen begleiten …

There are always meaningful songs for somebody. People are doing their courting, people are finding their wives, people are making babies, people are washing their dishes, people are getting through the day, with songs that we may find insignificant. But their significance is affirmed by others. There’s always someone affirming the significance of a song by taking a woman into his arms or by getting through the night. That’s what dignifies the song. Songs don’t dignify human activity. Human activity dignifies the song.

Everytime I think I’ve got enough new entries of CDs or vinyl on the shelf to listen to there’s always something else that sends a scream for attention …

The Virgin Years 1980 – 1985 is a new John Foxx five-CD box set that features the albums Metamatic, The Garden, The Golden Section and In Mysterious Ways.

Each CD features bonus tracks including B-sides and out-takes with more gathered on a fifth CD, Fusion/Fission.

We are promised a new ‘analogue master’ of Metamatic and the B-sides have been remastered too. This set also includes five postcards with various single artwork.

So: Any comments, fond memories from my fellow Manafonistas on Metamatic, The Garden, The Golden Section and In Mysterious Ways ? Would be helpful ! ;-D

Here’s one more which again will at least two of the Manafonistas be happy to hear: As Lajla wrote here earlier Monty Phyton have regrouped for several appearences and german/french TV station ARTE will broadcast on Wednesday, the 30th of July 2014 from 21.30h on the last of the Reunion „concerts“ they gave. I am a little bit sceptical how it can be possible to reproduce the innocent and wild humour they gave us from the late nineteensixties on now – but we’ll find out in this TV special ! And I am shure that a little bit later on we all will be presented with a DVD and Blue_Ray of this to buy and take home with us.

Jans blog entry about the Irmin Schmidt movie soundtracks made me think of another composer which movie soundtracks haven’t quite been acknowledged at the time: Peer Raben, who wrote many (most of all?) music for the films of Rainer Werner Fassbinder. I am not shure: have there been any vinyl or CD releases of his scores ?

Ein kleiner Programmhinweis fuer morgen abend: ab 20.15h gibt es in 3SAT einen hundertzwanzigminuetigen Konzertmitschnitt vom Verbier Festival 2004 mit Martha Argerich und dem Verbier Festival Orchestra zu sehen. Auf dem Programm stehen die „Rhapsodie espagnole“ von Maurice Ravel, das Konzert für Klavier und Orchester Nr. 1 in b-Moll op. 23 von Peter Iljitsch Tschaikowsky, Sowie die Sinfonie Nr. 1 in c-Moll op. 68 von Johannes Brahms.

 

 
 
 
Thomas Steinfeld ist neben Andrian Kreye der Leiter des Feuilletons der „Sueddeutschen“ und legt mit „Die Zukunft des Reisens“ ein Sachbuch vor dass sich mit der Kulturgeschichte des in die Ferne schweifen beschaeftigt. Was hat sich veraendert seit Goethe nach Italien reiste, in welcher geschichtlichen Entwicklung sind Klassiker der Reiseliteratur zu sehen ? Gehoert „Das Herz der Finsternis“ von Joseph Conrad auch dazu ? Wie wird sich in Zukunft das Reisen veraendern ? Viele weisse Flecken auf der Erde gibt es — man denke an Google Maps — nicht mehr.

Unter den hier versammelten Originalbeitraegen sind auch zwei ueberraschende Funde zu machen: drei faksimilierten Seiten aus einem der (neueren, von 2010 stammenden) Notizbuecher von Peter Handke – und auch Manfred Eicher schildert in einem kurzen Essay wie er gerne reist: mit leichtem Gepaeck.

Der Tag als der grosse Regen kam. – Was macht man an so einem Urlaubstag, zu Hause „auf Balkonien“ ? Die Butze aufgeraeumt. Gelesen. Und Musik gehoert, die sich mit dem durch die weit geoeffneten Fenster vernehmbaren Gurgeln aus den Regenrinnen und dem Rauschen der vorbeifahrenden Autos zu einem Soundtrack fuer den Tag vermischte: „Tracks And Traces“ von Harmonia & Eno; „Cluster & Eno“ (1977) und Jon Hassells „Last night the moon came dropping its clothes in the street“.

Wer noch eine spannende Lektuere fuer den Urlaub (oder ueberhaupt) sucht und sich auch an amerikanische Originalausgaben herantraut, dem sei der neue Roman von Stephen King empfohlen: „Mr. Mercedes“ versammelt wieder einmal alles, was ich an Stephen King so mag: nachvollziehbar beschriebene Charaktere („wie-aus-dem-Leben-gegriffen“) und eine auch dieses Mal sehr spannende Handlung.

In the gloomy pre-dawn hours of a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of unemployed hopefuls are lined up for a job fair. Without warning, a merciless driver plows through the crowd in a roaring Mercedes. Eight people are killed; 15 are wounded. The killer escapes into the early-spring fog never to be seen from again. Until now…

Detective Bill Hodges is a battle-hardened and streetwise crime fighter originally assigned to the Mercedes killings. Now retired, Hodges has lost his way in boredom and depression craving the thrills of taking down the region’s most notorious criminals. Mit „A Thousand Thoughts“ legt das 1973 gegruendete KRONOS QUARTET dieser Tage eine interessante Zusammenstellung aus bereits veroeffentlichten Alben vor. Versammelt sind auf dieser Compilation Zusammenarbeiten mit u.a.: Astor Piazolla (selbstverstaendlich mit einem Tango!), Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares, die ein Stueck von Terry Riley interpretieren sowie die bekannte irische Ballade „Danny Boy“. Dazu Musik aus Fernost und Afrika – und auch Blues, „Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground“ von Blind Willie Johnson zum Beispiel.
 
Natuerlich: von einem klassischen Streichquartett interpretierte Musik weist aufgrund der Instrumentierung eine gewisse Strenge auf; die Zusammenarbeiten auf „A Thousand Thoughts“ zeigen aber, dass diese dem Klangbild, dass wir mit Violinen, Cello und Viola verbinden durchaus neue, interessante Ausdrucksmoeglichkeiten und Klangfarben hinzufuegen koennen.
