Doch weiss man´s?

The cup is broken. Everything is broken. Everything is repairable. Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory this week detected two black holes colliding, one of whom is 30 times the size of the sun. With some work, we can translate the LIGO-detected waves to sound, allowing us to actually hear the gravity of the universe. Where are we? In an orchard, drenched in blue light. Why? Fuck knows. And these are the footsteps you follow – the tracks of impossible love. In the black sparkle of deep space, oh so lonely.

Anyone remembering the album, and the long „killer track“ from John Surman’s first or second  album for ECM? „The Amazing Adventures of Simon Simon“. Mr. Surman had been assisted by Jack DeJohnette whose latest solo album with the sons of Garrison and Coltrane is utterley inventive jazz. Joey is dying for it, and you could have heard it in my night show. The man on the cover reveals a sense of humour not typical for the ascetism of classic ECM covers. And he is definitely bearing no resemblance with my outer appearance. For god’s sake, I’m blessed with a good sense of humour. I have quite long hair and a rediscovered longing for the wilderness. My trip to the Highlands has only been the beginning. During the last weeks my life changed into a surreal mix of the inside of a washing mashine in full working mode (listen to the thrilling new Matmos record to get the point of being inside such a household treasure) and a Nouvelle Vague movie (with much more action involved than in that usual Eric Rohmer „ennui“). So, the end of the year might mark the end of my radio days. No sentimental feelings required. Too much horizons still opened (even if the sky will come tumbling down). I own a small appartment in Bochum that would offer shelter forever. On the other hand, my love for the wild side of life will never stop, and I’ve always known how to steal horses and apples, how to find good mushrooms, and how to beat up trolls and evil-minded lorry drivers (if necessary). And, change of scenery, I do have a favourite land: Great Britain. Brexit, or no Brexit. I’m speaking about the landscapes and two friends over there. I will walk the Coastal Path in Cornwall, I do know the „Road To St. Ives“ only too well. And you remember the other John Surman solo album with the same name? Great. Circles closing. Spaces opening. Good night, and good riddance!

Nein, bitte keine Aktionen.

„History and myth are also two forms of context Morrison is determined to combine in his music. His sets in 1973 juxtaposed original material from throughout his career with established soul and blues songs by Ray Charles and Sam Cooke, Willie Dixon and Sonny Boy Williamson. His own songs are composites themselves: blues, jazz, folk, and rock forms all appear in his music, sometimes at once, collapsing into a slipstream of associations. This feeling of endlessness, of the language of a genre losing its shape and blending with others, gives even his straightest R&B numbers the shape of a whirlpool.“

(Brad Nelson, pitchfork)

Last night I read a a passage in my show from Barbara Ehrenreich’s book „Dancing In The Streets – The History of Collective Joy“. The new edition of unreleased concerts of Van Morrison with his Caledonia Soul Orchestra surprises me in many ways. Listening  to these performances of exuberant  elan vital and joie de vivre, I’M THERE! And sitting on my petrol green sofa, slightly deprived of sleep, with  a glass of red wine, I’m joining the crowd of another era – pure joy floating through my body – I would call it „solitary, collective joy“!

ZEITREISE (2) – Tony Conrad with Faust: From the side of man and womankind, aus OUTSIDE THE DREAM SYNDICATE

“ … Jean-Herve amd Zappi stand in front of the curtain, ready to take on the audience. The roar is incredible, from the stage and from the audibly diagruntled audience. (Sorry, English audiences, you get the „award“ for that.) The soundman is going for the board, threatening to shut it down, while Jeff Hunt is physically preventing him. Jean-Herve is bleeding on bis bass. Zapppi is relentless. I am both in awe and in pain. Standing a few feet in front of me, in duplicate: Tony Conrad, his body sweeping wide shapes thelugh the space, yet his fingers moving with the most elegant precision. …

ZEITREISE (3) –  Mabrak: Jigsaw (several tracks of side two (in a row) of the vinyl reissue of that buried treasure of Reggae history, department of musical hypnotism)

„Experiments in percussion, in the middle of the night at Harry J’s. Funky versions of rhythms like Curly Locks and Too Late To Turn Back Now, led by talking drums. Blaxploitation is in the air… the Staples… even a blast of Barry White. Beautifully mixed by King Tubby, who couldn’t believe his ears. Originally released in 1976, in paper inners only. Smartly sleeved in quintessential Dug Out style this time around — with an insert, including a recent interview with Mabrak.

Some of you might hear from Mabrak for the first time now. Be careful: once tuned in, it might easily turn into addictive listening. The talking drum as a lead instrument was a kind of „deeply rootded novelty sound“ – the ascetic outfit of the band must have been a dream come true for King Tubby’s mixing desk. Or is this whole story just made up? Fooling you into a short chapter of the long history of great unmade albums? No. it really exists.“

So they rode the sea,
It went on and on
They were years away
Though it seemed so long
But the captain never told them what he knew
As the poor ship laboured on through the endless blue.

Oh the storm was strong
And the ship was so frail
But they stumbled on
Raising broken sails,
And they held the heavy sky on their open hands
And they dreamed of when their poor feet would touch the land.

Baby, we’re going round in circles!
Where is this place we’re going to?
Does anybody know we’re out here on the waves?
And are any of our signals coming through?

We’re going ‚round in circles.
We have no single point of view.
And like the clouds that turn to every passing wind,
We turn to any signal that comes through.

At the edge of the sea
Were the signs of the dove —
But the wrong way out
And the wrong way up.
We pushed the empty frame of reason out the cabinet door,
No we won’t be needing reason anymore.
Ooh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh, yeah yeah yeah, yeah yeah.

Some songs, you just can’t stop listening to them. This week I can’t stop listening to Midnight Train. And Glass in the Park. The best songs, well the best written ones anyway (as opposed to haphazard / praxis songs that do what they do) are Schneekugeln. You pick them up, there’s a world inside, and they shake the emotions inside you – you become that snowstorm, a world within a world, a universe in miniature, and moonbeams shoot out from your soul.

Midnight Train is a song about transience, about passing, about lots of things. It enacts its subject matter by passing too quickly, you just about think you’ve captured its essence, then it’s off. So you put the needle back to the start and time travel back three minutes and 49 seconds. „Midnight train / going, going, gone / The beating of my heart is like a drum / I never know the meaning of your kiss / Midnight train, must it end like this?“ It’s like there’s no value in permanance, only in fleetingness and glimpses. Presumably this is why the central character in Werner Herzog’s Nosferatu is so miserable. He is potentially immortal – it’s only the garlic and the crucifix that can save him. Save him by simultaneously finishing him off for good: one eternity swapped for another. Ordinary mortals just get on with the business of life’s cosmic blink.

Glass In The Park. Great title – we’re talking second law of thermodynamics here. And vicissitudes. „There’s glass in the park / and now that I’m up off my knees / I’ve picked up the speed to jump your pallisades / Then I shoot through the night / and suddenly all those once-lost concoctions froth / and chase the day away …“ A genius lyric. The glass shards in the park are the unforeseen hurts of love. But the central character is soaring above all the sorrow below, leaving the glass fragments behind, which then magically reform as brittle sci-fi Pyrex receptacles: the unbroken cups where the „once-lost concoctions froth“, the shake of the emotions in a universe within a universe, a trillion moonbeams bouncing off everything everywhere and passing right back through the centre of the soul.
