Archives: Frank Milautzcki

Between the high black painted walls of the Milchsackfabrik, a former printing ink factory, you get a club feeling even when the sun is shining outside. It was a warm summer evening, there were wooden seating areas, parked bicycles and plants in tubs. The Gutleutstraße seems to be endless and this point is off the beaten track. A winding inner courtyard with carefully painted pictures on the walls. A slight feeling of subculture. The stage with a small table and two simple chairs seemed almost lost in the gloomy hall, especially since only a few handfuls of visitors had gathered. On program were two different combinations of poetry and music.

Schnitt.

Part 2: Australian Guys

The performance of Nathan Curnow (the poet) and Geoffrey Williams (the musician) was intriguing. I´d never experienced this kind of method before. Nathan, on whose bedside table in Melbourne there´s an edition of W.S. Merwin´s Selected Poems, read one of his storylike, surreal, but nevertheless this world reflecting poems. Geoffrey, who did not know the poem yet, listened carefully, took some notes and a few minutes time and started with his musical interpretation and improvisation, a blend of electronic and acoustic sounds, soul, funk, blues and reggae, loops and sometimes a phrase from the poem or another kind of reference. Each poem got its own performance, the variety of sound seemed endless and everything with an unbelievable lightness and naturalness. For example after Nathan had read a poem in which Geoffrey missed the storyline Geoffrey used the line “Where is the story?” in his part of the show. Here´s one of Nathan´s poems:

Red Shawl Flapping

there are not enough flowers and the wolves close in
the baby wakes in an empty house
a splash upon the doorstep and a red shawl flapping
but nobody heard the shot
strands upon the spade that remains unhidden
a plot of earth beneath the pines
the moon comes chanting at the broken gate
the rope puzzles remain unsolved
cicadas sizzling above a war of wheat
sparrows revel in the dirt-bath dust
a television turning the milk upon the bench
toward a slow bold hunter’s nose
and the baby the chanting a red shawl flapping
on the grim slack whip of the line
a racket of carriages passing in the distance
everything gets dragged outside

After the show someone from the audience asked Geoffrey whether he´d record his performances to keep it. No, said Geoffrey, this is just for you. I let them go.
