Record shopping at night

von: Michael Engelbrecht Filed under: Blog | TB | 2 Comments

Now, believe me, THIS is happening (for real) on a rainy night in 1972. Some record stores seemed to have open all night long in that era. On one side, this is gritty realism, bathed in pale colours, on the other side, it is an example of magic timing. Just think, you‘re walking into that store by yourself, you see Joni Mitchell‘s „Clouds“, you see the new album by psychedelic matadors of Quicksilver Messenger Service, and you realize that guy besides you is Neil Young, bloody young Neil Young. The guy behind the counter makes a decent job – kudos. Neil is a bit pissed off finding a bootleg, and takes it out. And that‘s not the end of the story. It belongs to the little magic factor X of this historic footage that, at some point, the employee puts on the right record, let’s say for (unconsciously) soundtracking Neil‘s detective work. „Your mother should know“ – brilliant. Didn‘t it ever appear to you that every minor everyday blues that is not really brimming with potential can turn into a touch of „Strawberry Fields“?! Jim Jarmusch could have made a shining  indie movie out of this small scene.

Apropos JARMUSCH: er tritt am 11.Februar in Den Haag musikalisch als Teil des Duos Sqürl auf dem Grauzonefestival auf:

‘Sqürl consists of New York director / musician Jim Jarmusch and film producer Carter Logan and create exciting, experimental avant-garde with distortion, drones, tape loops, drum solos, and guitar feedback. A style that lends itself perfectly as a film score. Sqürl won the award for best soundtrack in Cannes for Only Lovers Left Alive (2014) together with the Dutch lute player Jozef van Wissem (in 2020 and 2021 on Grauzone). During their small European tour, this will be their only Dutch show.

Sqürl pays tribute to the surrealist filmmaker, photographer and painter Man Ray (1890-1976). They play a live soundtrack to four of his films; L’Etoile De Mer (1928), Emak Bakia (1926), Retour a la Raison (1923) and Les Mysteres Du Chateau Du De (1929). This is a special moment for Grauzone, also because the festival’s artwork is inspired by the atmosphere and style of Man Ray.

This could possibly be December 1971 or Early ‘72 based on the December 9th issue of Rolling Stone magazine with Pete Townshend on the cover at 10:28. The location of this record store was located at 6734 W Sunset Blvd in Los Angeles, CA. The original building has been demolished since then. One clue that gave it away was the “Sunset Center Parking” on the sign in the record shop.
