* in facts, next Friday this adaption of a Harlan Coben novel will be aired. And, honestly, this French series is a really watchable one. The German edition had been published some time ago: „Kein Lebenszeichen“ is the name of the book. Kudos also go to the other three shows, rather wild style mixes. „Cruel Summer“ is a teenage drama of the better kind. „Biohackers“ gives a good introduction into the ways students of Freiburg handle their lives. Und „Hit & Run“? I call it is an electrifying watch. Think of the Liam Neeson film Unknown, but really better. The story possibly could have worked as a film, but it’s so much better as a series. There’s more time to become invested with the characters and the surprising chain of events that unfold. With a gritty realism that comes close to „French Connection“, but the degree of empathy with some of its characters is way deeper. Do yourself a favour, and test the pilots. Btw, Hit & Run has the feeling of one of the many Harlan Coben adaptations on Netflix, like The Innocent. However, this is not a Coben adaptation, but an interesting mix of Israeli and American writers, actors and producers.
** Ah – and here‘s the difference between time traveling and time switching, in regards to „Cruel Summer“ – Dieses 10-teilige Drama spielt in drei Sommern der 90er Jahre und springt in jeder Folge, oft in rasanten Schnitten, zwischen ihnen hin und her. „Wie gut man damit zurechtkommt“, schreibt der Guardian zurecht, „hängt davon ab, wie viel Energie man hat, wie feinfühlig man auf Veränderungen bei Frisur und Make-up reagiert, und wie gut das eigene Fernsehgerät die verschiedenen Filter und Farbpaletten der einzelnen Jahre wiedergibt.“ Also: wenn man sich erst einmal auf den Film eingelassen haben (ein guter Tipp: die blau gefärbten Szenen stammen aus dem Jahr 1995 und spiegeln die emotionale Stimmung der Stadt in dieser Zeit), ist die Geschichte, die sich dahinter verbirgt, eine ziemlich gute Geschichte.
