Percussionists do not have just one clearly recognizable instrument but, instead, a lot of devices and materials with which to make sound. Every percussionist therefore has his/her very own collection and set up which makes them all look differently. Zlatko Kaučič is the percussive gardener or, put differently, a percussionist who is „gardening“ his sounds. This is a specification due to his posture when playing percussion: he is knelt like a gardener in a plant bed. That offers him a special range to use devices in a specific way. One of the specialties in that performance was a table zither on the left side behind him, which he would strum with his left hand while banging different devices in front of himself with his right.
Kaučič has been working in Spain, Switzerland and The Netherlands for longer periods and has collaborated with musicians and groups of a greater variety of styles and genres. More recently he has worked with the likes of Stefano Battaglia, Javier Girotto, Evan Parker, Saadet Türkoz and Paul McCandless of the group Oregon. He has an impressive discography which means he is highly respected among fellow musicians, but is a bit underrated and not so well known yet in the media and by audiences.

Meine Neugier ist geweckt, Henning ! Unter http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okN-oknFyzw gibt es ein Video von Zlatko Kaučič beim „Jazz Cerkno 2011“, zwar nur sieben Minuten – aber man hat einen kleinen Eindruck von seiner Kunst ! Sehr beeindruckend ! Marilyn Masur faellt mir da noch ein, eine aehnliche Klangzauberin !

Yep. Uebrigens habe ich — um mal kurz auf Buecher auszuweichen — in meinem Urlaub mit Begeisterung das Buch „Im Wald“ von dem niederlaendischen Autor Marcel Möring gelesen. Sehr gut !! – Mal schauen, vielleicht schreibe ich noch ein „Lesezeichen“ fuer den Blog hier ueber das Buch „Im Wald“. – Schade, hier in D. sind offenbar viel zu wenig niederlaendische Autoren bekannt – wenn man einmal von Connie Palmen und Cees Nooteboom (die ich auch gerne lese) absieht. – So entgeht einem vieles.
In Louteringsberg (2011) heeft Marcus Kolpa (uit DIS) zich met zijn dochtertje teruggetrokken op een heuvel in het oosten van het land. In een grote villa probeert hij het succes te vergeten van het boek dat hij ooit schreef, zijn spoorloos verdwenen vrouw en zijn moeder. Met het plotselingen overlijden van zijn moeder wordt de leegte van zijn herinnering ingenomen door een onthutsende reeks raadsels.

Mr Fordham from The Guardian and Mr. Henning Bolte seem to be on the same wavelength here: „Health and safety warning – this is a completely improvised live set from the duo of Norwegian percussion volcano Paal Nilssen-Love and Swedish pianist Sten Sandell. Jacana, recorded at Norway’s Kongsberg jazz festival last year, comprises just three pieces. Curvatur, the 23-minute opener, begins with a familiar free-improv reconnaissance of slow bell chimes and damped-strings tappings. But it soon erupts into zigzagging Cecil Taylor-like piano lines against a typical Nilssen-Love percussion rumpus, before entering an almost tonal phase like a kind of free-boogie, then becomes orchestrally rich and dense, and ends on quiet handclaps. The 17-minute Kauri mixes freebop, guttural, throat-singing vocals and bouncy stride-piano; the title track is a brief excursion into whistling treble sounds, wide dynamic shifts, and a delicate finale in quiet mallet-hits on bells and soft vocal calls. This pair’s vast experience and multi-idiomatic techniques infuse a remarkable dialogue.“
