Oxygen

Michael Gira: „Breathing and having a heartbeat are things that we’re completely not conscious of most of the time and take for granted. As someone who’s had severe bouts of asthma, I’m conscious of what it feels like to not be able to breathe. I was hospitalized for it. And this song was written after a particularly severe asthma attack. But now that I stopped smoking cigarettes, hopefully that will be gone. I had this event once when I was alone at my old house after my divorce. I was sitting, and suddenly I coughed, and whatever was in there lodged in my throat. I just couldn’t breathe at all, and I was by myself. I panicked. I really started to pass out and realized I was fucking going to die if I didn’t do something. So I just threw myself down on the ground repeatedly, and finally got a pinhole. I was slowly able to calm down and expand that pinhole and get oxygen. It took maybe 10 minutes. And then I lit a cigarette and had a beer. [laughs]“ (source: Pitchfork review, the song „Oxygen“ is on the new Swans album „To Be Kind“.)

Expat Canadian piano star Paul Bley, the man with the vision to hire the unknown Ornette Coleman back in the 1950s, was 75 when this solo concert was recorded by ECM’s Jan Erik Kongshaug and Manfred Eicher at the Oslo jazz festival – still exposing his profound knowledge of jazz to unflinching spontaneous reexamination. All the pieces are originals except for Sonny Rollins’s Pent-Up House, and if the blues remain a constant undercurrent, they’re forever being harried, stretched, compressed and artfully disguised. Bley often floats in a pulseless dream of molten runs and pealing trills, but familiar-sounding hooks keep appearing, even if over chords that seem to belong to other melodies entirely. Way Down South Suite begins like a sepulchrally slow jazz blues, then swings, stops dead, and resumes in flinty single notes and dense, clipped runs. Flame is like a Thelonious Monk ballad, but the resolutions to its phrasing spin and prance as if trying to break free of the song. Pent Up House is a thoroughly recognisable but flirtatious dance with the original. It’s personal, meditative, occasionally sombre music, but it couldn’t be anyone other than Paul Bley behind it.

Die Taste 141 wird gedrückt, die NSA-Musikbox knackt und knistert, der Plattenwagen setzt sich in Bewegung, eine rote Polydor-Single wird herausgefischt, das Shure-System fährt heran, nach dem ersten Ton…., was ist das denn? Gehts noch? Welche Platte wurde denn da gewünscht? Tony Sheridan and The Beatles: Ain’t She Sweet aus dem Jahre 1964.
Bert Kaempfert, Orchesterleiter und Produzent nahm in Hamburg mit dem britischen Sänger und Gitarristen Tony Sheridan (*1940) und den Beat Brothers – dahinter versteckten sich die Beatles – einige Titel auf. Der größte Erfolg dieser Partnerschaft war My Bonnie von 1961, ein Stück, das es in Deutschland im Dezember 1961 immerhin auf Platz 32 der Hitliste geschafft hat und mit gut zwei Jahre Verspätung in den USA auf Platz 26 der Single-Hitparade landete. Tony Sheridan sollte  dann allerdings im Sommer 1964 mit Skinny Minnie noch Platz 3 in Deutschland erklimmen.
 
 
 

 
 
 
Viel erfolgreicher mit dem Titel Skinny Minnie waren allerdings, zumindest in Deutschland, Jimmy And The Rackets, sie erreichten 1964 Platz 1 der Single-Charts und blieben 32 Wochen in den deutschen Hitlisten. Natürlich wurde ich als elfjähriger begeisterter Radiohörer besonders auf diese Version aufmerksam. Nachdem ich ein kleines kindliches Taschengeldvermögen bereits in die Musikboxen diverser Milchbars gesteckt hatte, um diese Platte zu hören, kaufte ich sie mir eines Tages. Über viele Wochen war diese Scheibe mein ganzer Stolz. Natürlich hatte ich keine Ahnung, dass das Lied eigentlich von Bill Haley komponiert und aufgenommen wurde, und das schon 1958.
 
 
 

 
 
 
Zwei, drei Jahre später kam ein listiger Schulkamarad – ich werde seinen Namen nie vergessen – auf mich zu und erzählte mir, er habe die erste Beatles-Single überhaupt. Neid! Die Platte trage den Titel Ain’t She Sweet, sagte er. Natürlich wollte ich ihm nicht glauben, für mich war immer noch Love me do vom Oktober 1962 die erste Single der Beatles. Nun denn, es ging hin und her, jedenfalls hatte mich dieser Schulkamard schon irgendwie angesteckt, heiß gemacht auf diese Platte. Leider wollte er mir die Single nicht gegen Briefmarken oder Fußballbilder eintauschen, auch Bares lehnte er ab, er wollte nur eines, Jimmy And The Rackets mit Skinny Minnie. Von dieser tollen Platte hatte ich natürlich jedem, der auch nur irgendwie an Musik interessiert war, erzählt.
Da brauchte ich natürlich Bedenkzeit, ein Vorab-Anhören der Platte wurde abgelehnt. Das hätte mich eigentlich stutzig machen müssen, aber ich war eben verblendet, sah nur die erste Beatles-Single vor mir und willigte schweren Herzens in den Deal ein. Kaum zuhause angekommen, hörte ich mir auf meinem PE Plattenspieler Tony Sheridan and The Beatles: Ain’t She Sweet an und war entsetzt, enttäuscht, fluchte, schimpfte, ich war sowas an reingelegt worden. Nie mehr ein Wort mit diesem Schulkamarden gewechselt, der sich nicht nur klammheimlich an meiner Jimmy And The Rackets-Platte freute. So, und beim nächsten Musikbox-Plattentausch wird Tony Sheridan and The Beatles: Ain’t She Sweet endgültig aus der Jukebox verschwinden und von Jimmy And The Rackets mit Skinny Minnie ersetzt.

One of the great ambient albums of 2014

I could add another LOST CLASSICS-story here. Upon first hearing the record (not the Spiderland-box – seems to be hard to get your hands on -), I was impressed, really impressed. I was skeptical at first because of the enthusiastic reviews (as people tend to overrate albums from the past). For example: the reissue of Lucinda Williams‘ debut is totally overrated, all her best works were yet to come! But, well, SPIDERLAND deserves every possible praise. It is at times calming, overwhelming, upsetting, terrifying, and skin-crawlingly uncomfortable, sometimes in the same moment. I have to add something. The first time I listened to this record was nearly one month ago.  And it was released in 1991. Never too late, so to speak. (m.e.)

 
 
 

 
 
 

Stuart Berman opens up the historic field of his Pitchfork-review with these well-written lines: „Compared to the get-in-the-van, play-anywhere ethic practised by fellow 1980s-hardcore students, Slint rarely performed live, and when they did, it was rarely as a headliner. Interviews were scarce; band photos all the more so. Spiderland – their second, final, and ultimately most revered album – wasn’t some painstaking, Loveless-scaled masterwork belabored over in the studio for months on end; it was a collection of six pared-down basement jams recorded over a single weekend, many of the lyrics rush-written at the last minute.

And Slint were so uncertain of their purpose upon the album’s completion, they actually included a call-out for female-vocalist auditions on record’s back cover, before just deciding to disband altogether prior to its official release. With Spiderland’s chilling, dead-of-night ambience, its predatory rhythmic gait, spine-tingling guitar plucks, and short-story narratives recited in unnervingly hushed tones, Slint had essentially crafted the mysterious soundtrack to their own disappearance.

Audiophile recording, brilliant album, naked room

In 2009 four young, perpetually black-clad Londoners released an album blessed with a rare feeling of what one could call „sonic unity“: every track just fits. There’s something incredibly clean about the xx’s self-titled debut, as though the band are performing in an hermetically sealed room devoid of furniture, fittings, dust, microbes and, well, anything that isn’t their instruments. Sparse drum machine beats, taut bass, a guitar tone polished to a mirror sheen and understated vocals from Oliver Sim and Romy Madley Croft make up a record of immense restraint. It’s almost the opposite of Phil Spector’s “wall of sound”: there’s an evidence of sonic space here that makes the xx’s gloomy brand of pop a joy to listen to.
