So listen to the silence. Once all other external sounds cut out, there´s no more escaping from yourself. The late John Cage put it like this: “ … sounds (which are called silence only because they do not form part of a musical intention) may be depended upon to exist. The world teems with them, and is, in fact, at no point free of them. He who has entered an anechoic chamber, a room made as silent as technologically possible, has heard these two sounds, one high, one low – the high the listener´s nervous system in operation, the low his blood in circulation. There are, demonstrably, sounds to be heard and forwever, given ears to hear.“
Silence marks the escape route through the self into a infinity of sounds. And this infinity finds its echo in what Gaston Bachelard, author of The Poetics of Space, discribed as the „intimate immensity“ that lies just beyond the immediate world. „Immensnsity is within ourselves“, he wrote. Ìt is attached to a sort of expansion of being that life curbs and caution arrests, but which starts again when we are alone. As soon as we become motionless, we are elsewhere: we are dreaming in a world that is immense. Indeed, immensity is the movement of motionless man … Always elsewhere. Driftworks resonates such inimate immensity.

Nun ist endlich auch klar, welch grandioses Werk heute aus meinem Plattenschrank endlich einmal wieder ans Tageslicht geholt wird. Es ist fast genau 20 Jahre her, ja es war 1997, da brachte Big Cats Records eine Vier-CD-Box heraus. Je eine CD des in Australien geborenen Paul Schütze, stateless, eine zweite nahm der Dortmunder Thomas Köner auf, Nuuk, die dritte kommt aus Japan, Nijiumu, der Komponist: Keiji Haino. Bleibt noch die vierte zu erwähnen: Pauline Oliveros & Randy Raine-Reusch, der Titel der Platte In The Shadow of the Phoenix. Von Pauline Oliveros, die eine US-amerikanische Komponistin und Akkordeonistin war und im November letzten Jahres starb, ging es ja erst kürzlich in dem Beitrag von Uli Koch zu Insect Music.
Diese einmalige CD-Box, die hoffentlich eines Tages wiederveröffentlicht wird – im Moment ist sie nur für einen riesigen Batzen Geld zu haben – trägt einen buchstäblich fort, man driftet ins Ungewisse, lässt sich irgendwohin treiben, ins Offene, eine musikalische Reise ohne Geländer.
